THE SOUND OF BELLS (SOM DOS SINOS)

Video installation
Minas Gerais, 2017

SOUND OF BELLS is an immersive video installation that brings the atmosphere of the bell towers of Minas Gerais into the exhibition space, exploring the relationship between the human and the divine. The installation features three video works filmed in nine different towns, capturing both sacred and secular rituals, the daily lives of residents, and the traditions of local bell ringers.
Set against the backdrop of baroque church bell sounds, the work reveals how each town’s specific ringing style becomes a form of cultural expression. More than communication, the bell tolls shape collective memory and belonging, anchoring individuals to their communities, territory, and faith.
The installation is part of the SOUND OF BELLS expanded cinema project, which also includes a mobile cinema tour, documentary film, webdoc and app.

Presented at: Bug Lab Exhibition (Oi Futuro, Rio de Janeiro, 2017) and Immaterial Heritage Brazil–Portugal (Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro, 2019)
Directed by: Marcia Mansur and Marina Thomé
