THE SOUND OF BELLS (O SOM DOS SINOS)

Feature documentary
Brazil, 2017 | 70’

In the historic towns of Minas Gerais, Brazil, the sound of bells marks the rhythm of everyday life — work, rest, prayer, celebration. From high in the towers, bell-ringers announce births, deaths, fires, masses, and sacred hours. Today’s bell tolls blend their colonial roots with the deep influence of Afro-Brazilian culture. This film explores religious experience and symbolic faith embedded in the daily life of cities where bell sounds are part of the country's intangible heritage.

Part art piece, part documentary... superbly shows rather than tells the bells’ religious, historical, and social meanings.
