SYNOPSIS
In recent years, Anna has delved into her family's yoik tradition by studying old archive recordings. This research culminated in the creation of Dreamscapes, a multi-artistic project where yoik and organic electronic music blend with video art.
Anna, whose family resides in the reindeer zone of the icy North of Finland, serves as the central thread intertwining the film. Her journey with her band Ánnámaret represents the overarching narrative, reflecting the diverse stories of other featured artists: Shoshona Kish, an indigenous artist from Canada; Deffmaa Maadef from Senegal; and exiled Iranian instrumentalist Elshan Ghasimi, who embodies ancient Iranian philosophical music. Additionally, the film explores the roles and contributions of women in the art and music industry, highlighting their significance and challenges.
We have interviewed the women behind the bands and artists who are reshaping contemporary music across diverse geographies and traditions: Ánnámáret (Sámi, Finland), Florence Adooni (Ghana), DefMaa MaaDef (Senegal), Elshan (Iran–Germany), Haepaary (South Korea), and Shoshona Kish (Anishinaabekwe, Canada).
