CINE RABECA

Live cine-concert / Audiovisual performance

CINE RABECA is a multimedia performance, a cine-concerto (film concert), a documentary expanded onto the stage where music brings archives back to life and the editing reflects on time, memory, disappearances, and the continuous making of images. On stage, musicians Luiz Paixão and Renata Rosa reunite cinematographically with their own trajectories, improvising toadas with their rabecas and recreating themselves in memories.
Luiz Paixão and Renata Rosa, partners since 1998 in the musical poetics of the Zona da Mata Norte region of Pernambuco, are seated side by side on a single bench at center stage. Behind them, a film projects their own life stories, composed from film archives produced by anthropologist and documentarist Marcia Mansur in the 2000s and ethnomusicologist John Murphy in the 1990s.
Paixão and Rosa were invited to create a new sound interpretation of the documentary archive and compose the live soundtrack. During the performances, film narrative and live music merge into a unique experience at every show, shaped by the emotions awakened through glimpses of the archive.
The show was developed during a residency at the Núcleo de Estudos Contemporâneos of the Museu da Imagem e do Som de São Paulo and premiered at Sesc Guarulhos and Sesc Avenida Paulista, São Paulo, 2019.
